The firm has a strong and varied practice with a focus on providing legal services to domestic and international companies/corporations operating in or with business interests in Sierra Leone. We represent a diverse group of corporate and business clients including individuals, partnerships, public corporations and various domestic and international companies. It handles and advises on, among other things, the incorporation of companies, debt restructuring, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, international maritime law, insolvency and international trade. We also undertake work in general common law, sports law, regulatory, real estate and property law, serious crime, labour and employment and intellectual property. With its extensive knowledge of the regulatory environment the firm has provided advice to international clients involved in government projects as well as projects within Sierra Leone’s growing private sector.

BMT recognizes that in the world today clients, whatever their size and status, need swift decisive resolutions. We provide clients with robust and effective representation through litigation including arbitration and mediation, advisory, negotiation, crisis management and dispute settlements.

Lawyers within the firm have advised and worked with government departments on various aspects of the development of the Justice Sector. We developed the Strategic Plan for the Law Officers Department, the Justice Sector Reform Strategy and Investment Plan 2012 to 2014,and the Commercial Law and Justice Report which forms a component of the current Justice Sector Plan.

Recent successes include representing the Claimants in a contractual dispute arising out of a joint venture mining and exploration agreement. Following a contested hearing the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) made an award in favour of the Claimants and dismissed the Respondents’ counterclaims. Two members of the firm are trained in mediation and arbitration.

Representation of Multi-National Corporations doing business in Sierra Leone:

The firm has represented several international clients doing business in Sierra Leone including: Hilton Hotels Worldwide, British Midland Airways (BMI), African Minerals Limited, WAICA, Lagans, Brussels Airlines, Pricewaterhouse Coopers.
Through its correspondent relationships, the firm has worked on and/or advised on various matters for major multinationals including Traffigura Beheer BV, Dynamiq, Weatherfords, Ecopetrol. We have also worked with and advised venture capitalists in their investment in the areas in mining, tourism, property development and agriculture.

We use our local expertise to provide an inclusive one stop service designed to ease the Client’s entry into the business environment of Sierra Leone.
Although Oil and Gas is in its infancy in Sierra Leone, we have worked with oil and gas companies like Mano Oil, HIR Petroleum and Ecopetrol – setting up, partnership, farming out and bidding for oil blocks.

Other areas:

The firm provides support to its clients in other areas such as in the acquisition and disposal and registration of property and company secretarial services. Through the firm we have co-authored the ‘Investor’s Guide to Sierra Leone’ with 2 other firms, Pennarth Greene and Company, a licensed issuing house and financial advisers and B and C Consulting, Auditors and Tax Consultants.

Members have contributed to the International Comparative Legal Guide on Project Finance (2014 and 2015) and Construction and Engineering Law (2014 and 2015) and International Arbitration (2015).
